Off to Aachen! Discover the city of the All Years Weekend

04/01/2026

Aachen is a historic city in western Germany, close to Belgium and the Netherlands where the Labyrint lies (yes, an actual Labyrint). Known as the residence of “Karel de Grote”, Aachen became the centre of the Carolingian Empire, and his legacy remains visible in the Aachen Cathedral; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former coronation church of many German kings. The city is also shaped by its natural hot springs, used since the Roman Times: the Elisenbrünnen marks one of the most famous thermal sources.

Beyond its major sights, Aachen offers several hidden gems. The peaceful Köningsweg, a narrow medieval alley behind the cathedral, provides a glimpse into the old town’s past. There is also the Hof, a cozy square filled with cafés where locals gather away from the main tourist paths. For unique views, the Lousberg hill offers a short hike and panoramic look over the city.

Thanks to RWTH Aachen University there is a lively atmosphere in the city, it brings students, cafés and cultural events into the compact city centre. Museums like the Centre Charlemagne and the historic Town Hall provide deeper insight into the city’s past.

Fun facts include Aachen’s nickname as the “city of gingerbread” due to its famous Aachener Printen, and the tradition of a mechanical puppet guard, the Bahkauv, said to scare drunk travellers in old legends. Aachen combines history, hidden corners, and lighthearted local stories in a welcoming setting. Thus providing the perfect location for a weekend getaway!
