First Years Weekend: a weekend full of Greek Gods, games & good times!
Last weekend, the board, mentors and a big group of first-years headed to Alphen, Brabant, for this year’s First Years Weekend!
The weekend was filled with laughter, new friendships, plenty of activities, and, of course, very little sleep. After arriving on Friday, everyone settled in with a pub quiz and some classic student games. It was the perfect way to get to know each other, have some fun, and give our first-years a taste of the association.
On Saturday morning, we kicked off the full programme with a variety of sports activities. The dancing queens of the committee started things off with a warm-up in matching outfits, followed by games designed to get everyone working together and building a solid foundation of trust.
After a peaceful breakfast and a quick change, it was time for Capture the Flag! Deep in the forest, the groups battled it out in a huge game, trying to capture the flag while also facing off in individual challenges using cards designed by the committee around this year’s Greek Gods theme.
Next up was the 'Bonte Middag'! Each group had to prepare a short skit or dance inspired by their assigned Greek God, which they then performed in front of the rest of the group and, of course, a very strict judge. After many hilarious and creative performances, Poseidon took home the win with a Little Mermaid-inspired performance featuring an evil Ursula and a crab with scissors for hands. You really had to be there!
After all the performances, it was time for dinner, followed by a true Dutch classic: the cantus. Many songs and drinks later, the evening came to an end with a silent disco, where everyone could dance the night away.
Unfortunately, Sunday meant it was time to pack our bags and head home. But before leaving, there was still one final announcement to make: the winner of the Crazy 79! Throughout the weekend, the groups had been working hard to complete as many challenges and tasks as possible, and one group managed to come out on top.
All in all, we had an amazing weekend full of fun, laughter and new memories. We hope to see all our first-years again at our activities throughout the year—and perhaps even joining one of our committees!
